Narrative Motifs and Sources of Narration in Daqiqi’s Motaqāreb Verses
Siavash Jafari (Author in Charge)
Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Daqiqi is one of the pioneers of Shahnameh composition in Persian literature; nevertheless, the scope and sources of his versified narratives have not yet been properly clarified. Focusing on the motaqāreb verses attributed to Daqiqi, particularly the 74 lines quoted in the Tārīkh-nāmeh-ye Herāt, this article examines the relationship of these verses to the Goštāsp-nāmeh and the tradition of prose Shahnamehs, in order to identify the probable source of their narratives.
METHODOLOGY: Employing a descriptive-analytical approach, this study first assesses the authenticity of the attribution of these verses to Daqiqi. It then identifies their narrative, linguistic, and stylistic features and compares them with the accounts of Ferdowsi and Thaʿālibi, as well as with the surviving evidence of the Abū al-Muʾayyed tradition.
FINDINGS: The findings show that these verses are consistent with Daqiqi’s known language and epic tone and may be regarded as authentic and significant remnants of his epic composition. At the same time, certain narrative differences between Daqiqi’s epic compositions, including the Goštāsp-nāmeh and the scattered motaqāreb verses, and the accounts of Ferdowsi and Thaʿālibi suggest and reinforce the hypothesis that the narratives found in Daqiqi’s epic compositions derive from a source other than the Shahnameh-ye Abū Manṣūrī. In this regard, the Shahnameh of Abū al-Muʾayyed Balkhi, owing to the presence of narratives such as the story of Āghosh Vahādān, is one of the most plausible candidates for the source of these compositions.
CONCLUSION: This study calls into question the assumption that Daqiqi’s Shahnameh composition was limited to the Goštāsp-nāmeh. By offering a new perspective on his place in the epic tradition, it emphasizes the need to reconsider prevailing views concerning the sources and scope of his work.
